Scrap the MAP:
February 25, 2010 Dear Representative: Taxpayers for Common Sense Action urges you to cosponsor H.R. 4683, the Scrap the MAP Act. Co-sponsored by Representatives Patrick Murphy (D-PA) and Scott Garrett (R-NJ), this legislation would eliminate funding for the wasteful Market Access Program (MAP), which for decades has subsidized wealthy corporations and trade associations to advertise their products overseas. Since its inception more than two decades ago, the MAP has spent 3.4 billion taxpayer dollars subsidizing ad campaigns for mega corporations. Past and current recipients include McDonalds, Nabisco, Fruit of the Loom, and M&M Mars, as well as beneficiaries through the American Forest and Paper Association and the U.S. Meat Export Federation which includes Hormel Foods, Monsanto, Sarah Lee Foods, and Tyson Foods. Little more than corporate welfare, the program has received significant criticism from private entities and government sources alike. The Government Accountability Office has issued critical reports on the program and both the Obama and Bush Administrations have recognized the significant pitfalls of the MAP and called for its phase out. Facing a massive federal deficit, there is no reason taxpayers should be underwriting the advertising campaigns of multi-million dollar corporations. Eliminating funding for the program would save taxpayers $2 billion over the next ten years and provide a dose of common sense to our agriculture programs.
Again, we urge you to cosponsor H.R. 4683 to cut the wasteful Market Access Program. For more information contact me or Autumn Hanna at (202) 546- 8500. Sincerely,
