They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. If so, the Talking Heads were pleased to see this quote from the Secretary of Defense when he testified at a hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 6th.

When discussing recent Congressional actions in the Budget Resolutions to increase the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) account to more than $90 billion, the Secretary had this to say, “While this approach clearly recognizes that the budget total we’ve requested is needed, the avenue it takes is just as clearly a road to nowhere.”

This also harkens back to a Taxpayers for Common Sense “Golden Fleece” award from 2003, which we dubbed, “The Bridge To Nowhere.”

Given everything we’ve written about the OCO account being no better than a slush fund, we’re pleased to see the Secretary acknowledge that this is not the preferred way to fund Pentagon operations. Now, if we can all just find the off ramp from this Road to Nowhere.
