Stop $150 million for troubled uranium project in NDAA

$150 million for the United States Enrichment Corporation's (USEC) Piketon, Ohio enrichment facility has been added to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) currently being debated in the House of Representatives. But with USEC on the brink of bankruptcy and the project facing technical hurdles, taxpayers should not be put on the hook for this project.

TCS has continually raised concerns with this USEC project and earlier today joined together with the Competitive Enterprise Institute, Union of Concerned Scientists, Friends of the Earth, National Taxpayers Union, The Non-Proliferation Education Policy Center and Natural Resources Defense Council to urge Congress to support efforts to eliminate the $150 million intended for the United States Uranium Enrichment Corporation’s (USEC) American Centrifuge Project in the NDAA.

USEC has already received millions of dollars of federal support and is actively seeking an additional $2 billion in a Department of Energy loan guarantee. Yet the company continues to face frequent credit downgrades and technological failures and was recently sent a delisting notice from the NY Stock Exchange. Taxpayers should not be asked to provide a dime to this troubled project.
