President Obama is likely to place his signature on a $789 billion stimulus bill by President’s Day.
Thank you to all of you who have supported our efforts to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse in this bill. Whether you have contacted your representatives, spread the word about our work, or helped us with a donation, your support is greatly appreciated.
But in our effort to stop waste, fraud, and abuse in this bill, the bill’s passage into law will not represent the end. It will only be the end of the beginning. Now is when the real work on oversight begins.
If you have not done so yet, and can support our work with a contribution, please contribute today.
Some of you have asked what role TCS plays in bringing oversight and transparency to the bailout and stimulus? With a new Administration vowing to be more transparent and recovery.gov coming on line, what does TCS add?
Well there are a number of things we bring to the table:
-
Independence
We take no money from political parties, the government, corporations, or labor unions. Our work is 100% independent. The only person we work for is you, the taxpayer. This lets us be objective. We don’t pull punches because of fear of losing an election, how the market will react, or having our budget cut by a political boss. Non-partisan, objective, and telling the truth; whether you are going to like what you hear or not. -
Experience
We’ve been down this road before. TCS has been in the weeds on spending for 14 years. We eat, sleep, and breathe the federal budget. If you read our recent Wastebasket, you know there is a great need for oversight in this stimulus bill. Our budget specialists have plumbed the depths of the budget process for years. We have an intimate knowledge of dozens of waste-prone programs and agencies (post-Katrina FEMA contracts, the Army Corps of Engineers, Iraq contracting, etc.) and have seen nearly every trick in the legislative book. -
Unmatched Commitment
My staff has been called a lot of things: hard-working, efficient, dogged, even scrappy…and that’s just by our allies. But one thing we’ve never been called: lazy. Nearly every day someone fires-up their computer before dawn. The oil in our office burns well past midnight. And weekends—they’re a great time for kids’ soccer matches and made-from-scratch pancakes, as well as earmark databasing and catching-up on archived C-Span hearings.
We work ourselves to the bone because that is what it takes. Taxpayers are being asked to take unprecedented actions to stem the current financial crisis. And it’s up to us to do whatever it takes to make sure any actions our government undertakes are not prone to waste, fraud and abuse.
