The group of 11 Republicans and 11 Democrats sent the letter to President Obama and leadership in the House and Senate.

Cascade Township Republican Justin Amash is far from being done with the debate over the so-called fiscal cliff.

Michigan's Third District Congressman joined 10 Republicans and 11 Democrats by signing on to a letter requesting responsible cuts in defense spending.

Rep. Dan Benishek (R-MI) is among the signees.

The letter reads, in part, "We believe that substantial defense savings can be achieved over the long-term, without compromising national security, through strategic reductions in the Pentagon’s budget."

The letter also refers to studies on defense spending cuts from groups including the Cato Institute, Taxpayers for Common Sense, the National Taxpayer’s Union, the Project on Defense Alternatives, adding that the "plans to save up to $550 billion without harming U.S. national security."

The letter comes as the nation's top corporate executives are stepping up pressure on Congress and on President Barack Obama to negotiate a deal to avoid a fiscal cliff, warning that failure will result in "significant" economic and social consequences. The CEOs, all members of the Business Roundtable, delivered letters to the White House and to congressional leaders urging a compromise that includes revenue, even if it means raising tax rates, and structural and benefit changes to social programs.
