Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – People in Colorado are speaking out at a house science subcommittee meeting in Washington D.C. on Friday.
The subcommittee met to discuss legislation aimed in favor of expanding access to massive reserves of oil shale. The proposal would direct the department of energy to spend up to $50 million dollars over the next five years on oil shale research.
Taxpayers for common sense came out with a report before the meeting on Friday called Subsidizing Oil Shale, tracing federal support for oil shale development in the U.S. "The report shows that we have been subsidizing this industry for well over one hundred years without apparent benefit. The tax payer has not seen a return on its investment. We feel this funding effort has been a dismal failure,” says Jill Lancelot, co-founder and senior adviser for Taxpayers for Common Sense.
Most likely no action will be taken on the proposed legislation at this time of the current lame-duck congress. Its also unclear how it will be received by the new congress.
