Back to The New Beginnings Report

The Pentagon estimates that taxpayers could save $6.5 billion per year by simply closing obsolete bases. This unnecessary spending comes as the United States military stands at a crossroads. The military is undertaking a costly restructuring of its forces, and base closures can free up tens of billions of dollars. Despite this pressing need, some in Congress are trying to delay the next round of base closures that is scheduled to take place in 2005.

New Beginnings, a report by Taxpayers for Common Sense and Christopher Hellman of the Center for Defense Information, provides a clear analysis of the necessity of base closures and examines the economic impacts of closures on communities.
