Washington, D.C. – The Pork Council, known primarily for their “Pork, the other white meat” campaign, has announced a multi-million dollar campaign to force lawmakers and other Washington budget watchdog groups to change the way wasteful spending is referred to during the annual battle over spending priorities in the nation’s capitol.

“Pork has really gotten a bum r.jpg” said John Jones, president of the Pork Council, “Americans have this perception that pork is fatty and unhealthy, and the leading reason why is the way the word ‘pork’ is used to refer to wasteful spending or bloated federal budgets. It’s ignorant of family hog farmers and it undermines our effort to promote pork as the healthier, less-expensive alternative to beef.”

To address this concern over nomenclature, the Council is proposing an immediate moratorium over the negative use of the word. The Council would also like to see a replacement term found as soon as possible. “We understand that people in D.C. need a word for wasteful spending – especially groups like Taxpayers for Common Sense and others after seeing the latest budget” said Jones, “but why not use something like ‘wasteful beef spending?’ Haven’t you ever seen a marbled steak? Beef is so much fattier than pork.”

“This is just another example of how political rhetoric of Washington lawmakers hurts the small farmer,” continued Jones. “They just don’t get it. Why do they continue to undermine our efforts to create new jobs and make America more prosperous?”
