The company was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Ottawa, Illinois. As of December 31, 2007, the Bank had 35 offices located in markets extending from the far western and southern suburbs of the Chicago metropolitan area across Central and Northern Illinois down to the metropolitan St. Louis area.

In early January 2009 the company began participating in the Treasury Department’s Capital Purchase Program. Under the program, Centrue received $32.7 million from Treasury in exchange for preferred stock and a warrant.
