Hampton Roads Bankshares, Inc. primarily serves as a holding company for the Bank of Hampton Roads, whose

 


primary service area is Chesapeake, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Bank of Hampton Roads operates 17 banking offices in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia, including eight offices in the city of Chesapeake, four offices in each of the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and one office in the city of Suffolk.

In December 2008, Hampton Roads Bankshares Inc. announced the acquisition of Gateway Financial Holdings, Inc. Gateway Financial was originally approved for $80.3 million through the Treasury Department’s Capital Purchase Program, and those funds were later transferred to Hampton Roads Bankshares.
