Support “Gang of Six” Bi-Partisan Plan to Reduce Our Nation’s Deficit

July 20, 2011

Dear Senator:

Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS) urges you to support the recent “Gang of Six” budgetary proposal as a good first salvo in the fight to rein in our yawning budget deficit and move the country back from the fiscal cliff.

We recognize that this plan is not perfect and antagonizes many constituencies on both the left and the right, but we cannot afford to spare the sacred cows. It tackles spending, it tackles tax expenditures and tax reform, and it tackles entitlement programs. There are mechanisms to force votes on the savings proposals and sequence the reform efforts.

This plan would cut the nation’s deficits by $3.7 billion over ten years, but is really a framework that has to be filled in with details. TCS has submitted hundreds of billions in “low hanging fruit” possible savings to Congress and is ready to work with you to come up with difficult, but critical additional savings as well as develop the necessary structural budget reforms that will lead the country out of the fiscal wilderness.

We urge you to support the package as a good starting bid and to work to improve it as it makes its way through Congress. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further please contact me or Steve Ellis at 202-546-8500 ext. 126.

Sincerely,

Ms. Ryan Alexander
President
