Hurricanes and superstorms represent some of the most catastrophic and recurring costs to U.S. taxpayers. At Taxpayers for Common Sense, we advocate for reforms to federal disaster spending that prioritize fiscal responsibility, risk reduction, and accountability. While critical for recovery, these funds often lack safeguards to ensure investments in mitigation—like fortified critical infrastructure or moving properties out of the floodplain—which save $6 for every $1 spent.

We push for stricter oversight of programs like FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund and reforms to redirect funds toward pre-disaster resilience, restoring wetlands as non-structural flood control and relocating flood-prone communities. By advocating for data-driven risk assessments, transparent tracking of mitigation spending, and equitable cost-sharing models, we work to reduce the growing burden of extreme weather on taxpayer dollars while protecting vulnerable communities from escalating climate threats.
