The nuclear energy industry has received extensive taxpayer support since its inception, including federal research and development (R&D) funding, royalty-free uranium extraction on public lands, preferential tax treatment, risky federal loan guarantees, subsidized accident liability coverage, and a production tax credit.

Despite decades of federal subsidies, the industry continues to struggle with delays, cost overruns, and project cancellations. It has consistently failed to remain competitive with other alternative, more cost-effective energy sources. Before committing further taxpayer dollars to nuclear energy, policymakers must fully consider the existing inefficiencies, costs, and subsidies, weighing them against more affordable, lower-risk alternatives.
