A new report is urging Congress to demand more information and oversight of Trump’s Golden Dome system before it hands over further funds.

The program — envisioned as a missile defense shield protecting the homeland from incoming missiles — will fail and cost trillions in the process, according to a report from the fiscal watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense.

The report outlines “insurmountable” technical and economic challenges for Golden Dome, warning that the effort could accelerate a nuclear and space arms race and destabilize future arms control agreements.

“Golden Dome is a wildly expensive way to fail to address the nuclear threat,” said Gabe Murphy, a policy analyst at Taxpayers for Common Sense.

“The viability challenges associated with intercepting peer-level nuclear weapons are effectively insurmountable,” he added. “We’ve been down this road before with Star Wars and the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system. We don’t need to spend another $3 [trillion] or $4 trillion on a gilded money pit to learn the same lesson again.”
