The Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) Omnibus Supplemental includes at least $778.5 billion in Defense spending. How did we get to that figure? Well, you have to do a lot of hunting and gathering of facts across several appropriations bills to find it.

First, $736.4 billion is in the Defense appropriations bill for discretionary and mandatory spending at the Pentagon.

Then you add $14.9 billion in military construction and family housing programs in the VA/HUD/MILCON appropriations bill.

On top of that, you layer $20.7 billion for the nuclear weapons programs at the Department of Energy, in yet a separate appropriations bill, Energy and Water Appropriations

And, finally, there is $6.5 billion for the Pentagon in the emergency supplemental appropriation for Ukraine.

That’s how you get to more than $778 billion. Budget watchdogs like us need to go lie down for a minute as we contemplate this massive figure. Also, our calculators have to cool off a little.
