The Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy gets a 9.8% boost in FY2022 compared to FY2021 enacted level. Reactor Concept R&D, a program that has poured millions of dollars on expensive small modular reactors (SMRs) that may not reach commercialization in time to have meaningful climate impact, gets $257 million, or 23.6% more than the FY2021 enacted level. Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP), authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 2020, will receive another $250 million for this fiscal year. At first glance the funding is on par with what the program received last fiscal year, but don’t forget that ARDP already got appropriated $2.477 billion through the infrastructure package.
