The Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP) is an initiative designed to reduce methane emissions, particularly in the petroleum and natural gas sector. Methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG) and the primary component of unprocessed natural gas, has a global warming potential 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 20-year period. If unchecked, methane emissions could significantly impact the environment and global climate.
