Washington, D.C. – The following is a written statement by Keith Ashdown, Vice-President at Taxpayers for Common Sense on Boeing US Air Force Tanker Announcement:

“If Boeing executives want to blame anyone for the delay in the tanker program all they need to do is look in the mirror. Nefarious and unethical behavior at the highest levels of the company is the reason the program is under review. The delays are of Boeing’s own making, engaging in economic blackmail over the company laying off hard working employees will not move the process any faster. Boeing received unprecedented special treatment from the Air Force in the tanker contract process. Now the DOD is trying to find out how many of these tankers our nation needs, what are the other alternatives for the program and if the Boeing tanker is a good fiscal investment.”

“We are also pleased to hear that Boeing has found religion over the new oversight studies that were added at the request of the Senate and House defense authorization committees. For months, Boeing has been attempting to thwart any efforts by lawmakers to make sure that U.S. taxpayers interests would be protected. Wrapping their new found faith in these studies with a politically motivated statement about job losses reveals this announcement as the cynical public relations stunt that it is.”
