Oil and gas companies get billions of dollars in subsidies from taxpayers each year because the system for managing production on federal lands is outdated and built to boost their profits.

It’s time to end the giveaway and get our billions back.

Thankfully, Congress has an opportunity to end the cronyism and get taxpayers a fair return when the oil and gas we own is produced on public lands. Bipartisan legislation making major reforms has already been introduced and is waiting to be passed.

Now the real work begins.

Tell your Members of Congress to pass bipartisan reforms and get taxpayers a fair return on federal oil and gas.

Dear [insert Representative/Senator name here],

I support reforming the federal oil and gas system to get taxpayers a fair return and end needless subsidies to oil and gas companies. I urge you to seize any legislative opportunity to propel leasing reforms and implement lasting change.

Federal lands and waters and the resources within them belong to taxpayers. For too long, oil and gas companies have been able to drill on federal lands and profit from producing oil and gas without paying taxpayers what we’re owed. An onshore royalty rate set in 1920, bonding levels last altered in 1960, rules that let companies waste natural gas without paying, and rent and minimum bid rates that were set in the 1980s effectively give drillers billions of dollars every year that should belong to taxpayers.

Holding hearings and debating reform bills is helpful, but don’t stop there. Undervaluing our nation’s natural resources is wrong on principle, bad policy, and it’s time for it to end. Put taxpayers first and pass legislation to reform the federal oil and gas leasing system.

Sincerely,

[name]
